Pulsations for trombones and tuba

by Ivar Lunde, Jr.

Originally entitled Djevelens Dans (The Devil's Dance), the composition was commissioned by the Royal Danish Brass of Copenhagen, Denmark in 1985. The first performance took place at the Tivoli Garden Concert Hall on May 18 the following year. The ensemble requested a change in the title due to planned performances in churches. The title Pulsations is less "offensive" while still suggestive of the rhythmic interplay and textural and sonorous exchanges between the various instruments in the work. The extensive use of the tritonus is of course a reflection of the original title. The work has been performed frequently by the Royal Danish Brass in Copenhagen, Denmark.
